Where do I catch the Devonport ferry in the city?+
The Devonport ferry departs from Pier 1 at the Downtown Ferry Terminal, located at 99 Quay Street, Auckland CBD. The terminal is a short walk from Britomart Train Station. Paper tickets can be purchased from ticket machines at the terminal.
Can I take my bike on the ferry?+
Yes, bikes are generally welcome on Auckland ferries subject to space availability. There is no additional charge for bikes on most services. During peak times, space may be limited so arrive early. Check with the specific ferry operator for any restrictions.
Can I bring my dog or cat on the ferry?+
Small pets in a secure carrier are generally permitted on Auckland inner harbour ferries (Devonport, Bayswater, Birkenhead etc.) at the operator's discretion. Dogs must be kept on a lead and under control at all times. Larger dogs may be refused boarding during busy sailings. For Waiheke and Rangitoto services, contact the operator directly before travelling as pet policies may differ. Guide dogs and registered assistance animals are always welcome on all services.
Can I bring a pram or pushchair on the ferry?+
Yes, prams and pushchairs are welcome on all Auckland ferry services. During peak hours on busier routes like Devonport, it's worth boarding a little early to ensure space. Foldable prams make it easier to navigate the gangway. Staff are generally happy to assist.
Is there parking at the ferry terminals?+
Free park and sail facilities are available at Devonport, Birkenhead, Northcote Point, Bayswater, Pine Harbour, and Half Moon Bay. West Harbour also has parking on weekdays. The Downtown Ferry Terminal does not have dedicated free parking (paid parking is available nearby on Quay Street and surrounding streets). Arriving early on weekday mornings is recommended as spaces fill quickly at popular terminals like Devonport.
What happens if I miss my ferry?+
On frequent routes like Devonport, the next sailing is usually only 15–30 minutes away so it's rarely a big problem. On less frequent routes (Gulf Harbour, West Harbour, Pine Harbour) gaps can be an hour or more, so it's worth checking the timetable before you leave. Your ticket or AT HOP tag is valid on the next available sailing. You don't need to re-purchase.
How do I know if my ferry is cancelled or delayed?+
Are there toilets on the ferries?+
Most larger vessels on the Waiheke, Gulf Harbour, Half Moon Bay, Pine Harbour and Hobsonville routes have onboard toilets. The shorter inner harbour ferries (Devonport at 12 minutes, Bayswater at 10 minutes) typically do not. There are toilets available at the Downtown Ferry Terminal and at most suburban terminals.
